Back in my day...

Back in my day...

Usually as a parent, being an 80’s (or even a 90’s) kid, you’ve got your kids covered when they start complaining about the “hardships” of being a kid.

You probably know the conversation?

Kid - “I’m bored”

Parent - “Back in my day we only had four TV channels, there was no PlayStation, we didn’t have computers, there were no mobile phones, etc, etc...”

However in the year 2020, with everything that’s happening with Coronavirus, I think today’s kids might have us covered?

If you look back at some of the larger disasters and tragedies from 1980’s you’ll see events like Chernobyl, the Exxon Valdez Oil Spill, Pan Am Flight 103, the Space Shuttle Challenger disaster, as well as a number of large volcanic eruptions and earthquakes .  Whilst these were all tragic events and impacted thousands of lives, as I look back, I can’t really say they shaped my childhood.

Fast forward 40 years and were in the middle of a worldwide pandemic, impacting almost the entire population of this planet.

As parents, we’re currently struggling with kids, that if like mine, are currently bouncing of the walls and slowly driving us insane.  I’ve read these kids reports and the prospect of having to home school these “easily distracted” students, is keeping me awake at night.

I blame the Coronavirus for this! For impacting the lives of the entire population of the planet, for me having to home school my kids, but mostly for taking away the biggest comeback I have as a parent - “Back in my day...”

Replay the conversation from above.

Kid - “I’m bored”

Parent - “Back in my day we only had four TV channels, there was no PlayStation, we didn’t have computers, there were no mobile phones, etc, etc...”

Kid - “Yeah, but you were allowed to play with your friends, go to school, play sport, etc, etc...”

Kid 1, Parent 0.
