It’s pretty rare that something transcends generations like Star Wars, in that you get to watch your kids discover something, that you, as a kid, loved and grew up with.
As a massive Star Wars fan I’d always put considerable thought into how I’d introduce the boys to the Star Wars galaxy. Which movie do we start with? How long do we wait? Should we wait until they’re both old enough (so they could watch it together - like I did with my brother and sister)?
Finally, after much thought, I decided to start at Episode IV and, much like Obi Wan watched over Luke Skywalker growing up, I waited until I thought my young Padiwan’s were ready.
Eventually the wait got the better of me and I decided it was time to introduce the oldest, Josh, to Star Wars.
We weren’t even halfway through the movie and I honestly thought I’d failed as a parent. Josh was showing zero interest and I’d spent most of the movie getting asked “Is that a goodie or a baddie?” I knew I’d failed miserably with my explanations, when he cheered enthusiastically as Darth Vader picked off rebel pilots attacking the Death Star.
The force definitely did not appear strong in me! I was about to hang up my lightsaber and call our first foray into a galaxy, far, far away a complete failure, when I noticed Lochy, who I thought was way too young to understand, had crept into the room and sitting there wide eyed.
There was hope...
From there he was hooked and quickly went on and watched all the other movies, started collecting figures and reeling off all sorts of Star Wars related facts that he’d discovered on YouTube.
It’s been pretty cool getting to watch the recent trilogy with him as they’ve came out. I’m not sure who’s more excited as the cinema goes dark and we’re transported to “along time ago in a galaxy far, far away...”
